Silicon Graphics were one of those names from my childhood that always brought to mind exorbitantly powerful 3D workstations that were well beyond the means of ownership by mere mortals.

They were the types of machines that the original Jurassic Park dinosaurs would be created on.

Seeing one in the flesh for the first time at the Cambridge Computing History museum was memorable experience.

The video above shows the impressively smooth animation and vivid colours of the screensaver they’d setup to run on the machine. The Silicon Graphics CRT provides an extremely sharp and crisp picture.

I can only imagine how ahead of their time these machines must have been back in the day.
