HDD Synth MKV hardware arrives 23 Jul 2026

After finalising the HDD Synth MKV hardware and sending off my order to JLCPCB I was rewarded with a lovely blue box arriving from my DHL delivery driver a few weeks later

The plan for the MKV revision has been to essentially create something that is finally ready to open up as a Kickstarter so that those who are interested can purchase a device for themselves

In the MKV I wanted to create something as small and portable as possible, so that people could use it across a number of different devices. From a modern PC to an old Amiga.

The biggest engineering challenge I faced with this revision was embedding an RP2350 chip on the PCB itself, along with the supporting components. Rather than simply use a Pi Pico as all the previous versions had.

This also gave me a chance to make use of a USB C connector, which I'd argue is a step up over the Micro USB connector on the Pi Pico

When I first plugged the MKV into my MacBook I was extremely disappointed to discover that it wasn't visible, it didn't work! I'd flown too close to the sun, trying to design something more complex than I'd had before and it hadn't worked out. I felt gutted

After I took a moment to compose myself and think it through, I decided to try another cable. Voilà! It worked, I was ecstatic!

There are a few final tweaks that I need to make to this design, but they're all quite minor.

I was so focused on getting the embedded RP2350 chip working, that I made some minor mistakes. However they're all easily fixed.

So I'm very much hoping that the next minor revision will be the final one before we're able to announce the Kickstarter and get it out into the hands of everyone that wants one
