Quake II isn’t a game I thought that much of growing up
Sure, I could appreciate the cutting edge 3D engine it introduced to the world, but I liked games with a bit more story and content. Quake II was just repetitive and not that enjoyable, right?
I thought it was time to challenge that view point and pickup a copy to install on my Pentium 200 MMX and Voodoo 2 powered Packard Bell.
Firing it up initially showed the default 320 x 240 software rendering which has quite an iconic look, but certainly doesn’t show the engine at it’s best.
Right, let’s fix that
After spending a few hours fighting through the levels, I can happily say I was completely wrong. Quake II is still a real blast to play though!
Having an official version with the banging soundtrack is likely a big reason for this enjoyable, as it really adds to the whole experience.
Also knowing that the 3D visuals were being generated by real original 3dfx hardware adds to the experience.
